Rye Old Fashioned
Category: Classic · Mood: Slow down and mean it
The Old Fashioned is a classic cocktail and often a “go-to” option. As long as it rests on a clear cube, or block of ice. It's usually the first drink I make when I'm decompressing. There’s no performance, no fuss. Just a good pour, a big cube, and something worth sitting with.
The Essentials
Rye whiskey — 2 oz
Maple syrup — ¼ oz
Angostura bitters — 1 dash
Orange bitters — 2 dashes
Orange peel — for garnish
The Build
Add your syrup and bitters to a mixing glass first. Let them get acquainted.
Add rye and a generous handful of ice. Stir for a full 30 seconds — longer than you think you need to. You're not just chilling it, you're opening it up.
Strain over one large cube in your rocks glass. Express an orange peel over the glass, run it along the rim, and drop it in.
Bottle I Reach For: Rittenhouse 100 Proof Bottled-in-Bond. High rye content, a little heat, and it costs under $30. It's not trying to impress you, it just does.
