Bee’s Knees

Bee's Knees

Category: Classic · Mood: yes gurl

Nish's Note: The Bee's Knees is a Prohibition-era drink that was originally designed to mask the taste of bad gin. I choose to take that as a compliment to the recipe — that even with bad ingredients, someone made something this good. With a proper gin, it's genuinely lovely. Yes, gin can be lovely, light, and floral.

The List

  • McQueen & the Violet Fog — 2 oz

  • Fresh lemon juice — ¾ oz

  • Honey lavender syrup — ¾ oz

  • Lemon twist or edible flower — for garnish

At a Glance

  • Glass: Coupe

  • Method: Shaken

  • Ice: None — served up

The Build

  1. Chill your coupe glass in the freezer for at least 10 minutes before you build this. A warm glass will flatten everything.

  2. Combine gin, lemon, and lavender syrup in a shaker with ice. Shake until the shaker frosts — about 15 seconds of real effort.

  3. Double-strain into your chilled coupe. The double strain removes any ice chips and keeps the surface clean and slightly frothy.

  4. Garnish with a lemon twist expressed over the surface, or an edible flower if you're feeling it.

Bottle I Reach For: I love McQueen and the Violet Fog, second after Barr Hill. Both work and are more botanical and flowery than the traditional Hendricks.
